Mailburger vs Postmark
Postmark is a transactional-first email API and SMTP service for app email such as password resets and receipts, owned by ActiveCampaign since 2022. Mailburger is an email marketing tool for newsletters, signup forms and automations, built to sit next to an API provider like Postmark rather than replace it.

Where Mailburger wins
- A drag-and-drop editor, list management and segments, none of which Postmark offers
- Signup forms with double opt-in, and automations with branches and waits
- SAML single sign-on on Pro; Postmark has no SSO
- Test sends and confirmation emails do not count toward your limit; Postmark counts sandbox tests
Where Postmark wins
- Built for app email, with transactional and broadcast mail on separate IP ranges
- Inbound email parsed to JSON on Free, Pro and Platform
- 45 days of full message content and events on every plan
- A free developer plan that does not expire, and the same support on every plan
Watch out for
- Broadcast streams need approval, and every new account is reviewed by hand
- Overage cannot be capped or turned off
- Inbound messages, sandbox tests and each CC or BCC address count toward volume
- Monthly billing by card in US dollars only, and no EU hosting
Switching
Moving from Postmark, step by step
This guide moves your marketing email (newsletters and other broadcasts) to Mailburger. Password resets, receipts and notifications stay on Postmark.
1. Decide what moves
Anything you send through a Postmark broadcast stream, or to a list of subscribers, moves to Mailburger. Transactional streams stay where they are.
2. Export your subscribers
Postmark does not hold your lists, so export them from your own app as a CSV, with names and any fields you personalise with. Use the unsubscribes your app has collected from Postmark's webhooks to leave out everyone who opted out.
3. Recreate fields and import
Create your custom fields under Audience → Custom fields, create an audience for each list, then import each CSV. Tags can be added during the import.
4. Translate template variables
Postmark templates use Mustachio variables such as {{name}}, filled from the model your app sends. Here, use {{first_name}}, with a fallback such as {{first_name|there}}, and {{custom.your_field}} for anything else. See merge tags. Rebuild your broadcast layout in the drag-and-drop editor.
5. Move send logic out of your code
Scheduled broadcasts become campaigns you send or schedule from the app. Follow-ups that your code timed become automations, and audience filters become segments. Our signup forms can replace forms you built yourself, with double opt-in.
6. Connect your app
Send new signups to our REST API: POST /api/v1/contacts upserts by email. Product events can be recorded as custom events that start automations. Your Postmark integration for app email stays as it is.
7. Verify a sending subdomain and warm up
Verify a sending domain for marketing, ideally a subdomain such as mail.yourbrand.com, so its reputation stays apart from your app email. Start with your most engaged subscribers; our guide on warming up a domain explains how.
Questions
Asked at the counter
Can Mailburger replace Postmark?
Not for app email. Mailburger has no transactional API or SMTP relay. Keep Postmark for password resets and receipts, and use Mailburger for newsletters and automations.
Does Postmark have a free plan?
Yes. The Developer plan gives 100 emails a month, needs no card and does not expire, but allows no overage and does not include the Bulk Email API.
Can I send newsletters with Postmark?
Postmark has broadcast streams for bulk email, but new customers need approval and support must enable the Bulk Email API. It has no drag-and-drop editor, list management or campaign reporting, so your lists stay in your own app.
Does Postmark offer single sign-on?
No. A Postmark guide says it does not offer SSO at this time. Mailburger includes SAML single sign-on on Pro at €20 a month.
What does Mailburger cost at 100,000 emails a month?
Pro is €20 a month for up to 50,000 contacts and 500,000 emails. Postmark's Basic plan at that volume means the 125,000 tier for $115, which covers app email that Mailburger does not send.
How do I move newsletters from Postmark to Mailburger?
Export your subscriber list from your own app as CSV, import it into an audience, rebuild your broadcast templates in the editor and keep Postmark for app email. The step-by-step guide is on this page.
