Where Mailburger wins

  • 10,000 contacts on Pro for €20 a month; Klaviyo's email plan is $150
  • Only subscribed and pending contacts count; Klaviyo counts every emailable profile
  • Agency plans with white-label client workspaces under one bill
  • Priority support on Pro; Klaviyo's faster support tiers cost $500 or $1,800 a month

Where Klaviyo wins

  • Deep Shopify and WooCommerce data, with predictive analytics on paid plans
  • SMS, WhatsApp, push, reviews and a helpdesk in the same platform
  • Flows and unlimited custom user roles on every plan, including Free
  • SAML single sign-on on any paid plan

Watch out for

  • Every emailable profile counts, including people you have never emailed
  • Accounts over their profile limit are upgraded automatically each cycle, and this cannot be switched off
  • Price steps between tiers, such as $150 at 10,000 profiles and $175 at 10,001
  • No SMTP relay; transactional emails need per-message approval and a paid account

Switching

Moving from Klaviyo, step by step

Klaviyo is built around store data, so the move is mostly about deciding which profiles and flows you still need.

1. Export the profiles you email

Export the Klaviyo lists and segments you actually send to as CSV files, with the profile properties you personalise with. Only bring people who agreed to hear from you; leave suppressed and unsubscribed profiles out.

2. Recreate properties and audiences

Create a custom field for each profile property you use under Audience → Custom fields, then create an audience for each list and import each CSV into it. Tags can be added during the import, for example from-klaviyo.

3. Translate merge tags

Klaviyo templates use tags such as {{ first_name|default:'there' }}, and custom properties such as {{ person|lookup:'Favourite colour' }}. Here they become {{first_name|there}} and {{custom.favourite_colour}}. See merge tags.

4. Rebuild your key flows

Recreate the segments your flows send to, then rebuild the flows that matter most as automations: the welcome series first, then win-back and follow-ups. Triggers include subscribing, a tag being added, a date field, entering a segment and a custom event from the API. Steps include delays, if/else branches, random splits, waits for an open or click, and goals.

5. Send store events through the API

Mailburger has no built-in store integration. If you need purchase activity, send it from your shop or backend to our REST API: POST /api/v1/contacts upserts by email, and POST /api/v1/contacts/{email}/events records a custom event that can start an automation. Keep an API provider for order confirmations and other app email.

6. Verify your domain and warm up

Verify your sending domain with SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, then start with your most engaged contacts and grow volume gradually. Our guide on warming up a domain explains how.

Questions

Asked at the counter

Is Mailburger a cheaper alternative to Klaviyo?

On list price, yes. Klaviyo's email plan is $150 a month at 10,000 active profiles and $720 at 50,000. Mailburger Pro covers up to 50,000 contacts and 500,000 emails for €20. Klaviyo includes store integrations and predictive analytics that Mailburger does not.

Does Klaviyo have a free plan?

Yes: up to 250 active profiles and 500 email sends a month, with the Klaviyo logo on emails. Email support ends after the first 60 days.

What counts as an active profile on Klaviyo?

Any profile that can be emailed, whatever its consent status, including profiles you have never emailed. Suppressed, unsubscribed and deleted profiles do not count. On Mailburger only subscribed contacts and contacts pending double opt-in count.

Is Mailburger a good fit for an online shop?

Mailburger has no built-in store integrations. You can send purchase activity as custom events through the REST API and start automations from them, but if you rely on product feeds, reviews or predictive analytics, Klaviyo fits better.

Can Mailburger send order confirmations?

No. Mailburger is for marketing email. Keep an API provider for order confirmations and password resets, and use Mailburger for newsletters and automations.

How do I move from Klaviyo to Mailburger?

Export your lists and segments as CSV, recreate the profile properties you personalise with as custom fields, import them and rebuild your key flows as automations. The step-by-step guide is on this page.
