- Going over your limit adds contact blocks automatically, at rates shown only when logged in
- The Free plan is down to 250 contacts and 500 sends a month, with no automations
- Transactional email needs Standard or Premium plus $20 per 25,000-email block
Switching
Moving from Mailchimp, step by step
Moving tools feels bigger than it is. Here is the order we suggest.
1. Export your contacts
From your Mailchimp audience, export contacts as a CSV. Export subscribed and unsubscribed contacts separately, so you can keep a record of everyone who opted out.
2. Import them here
Create the custom fields you need under Audience → Custom fields, then import the CSV of subscribed contacts into an audience and map the columns. Leave unsubscribed contacts out so they never receive a campaign; on Mailburger they would not count toward your plan anyway. Tags can be added during the import.
3. Update merge tags
Mailchimp writes merge tags like *|FNAME|*. Here they look like {{first_name}}, with optional fallbacks: {{first_name|there}}. Custom fields become {{custom.your_field}}. See merge tags.
4. Rebuild your key automations
Start with the welcome series and any post-purchase emails. Our automations cover triggers, waits, if/else branches and "wait for an open or click". Rebuild the segments they depend on first.
5. Connect your systems
If contacts reach Mailchimp from your website or app, point those integrations at our REST API. POST /api/v1/contacts upserts by email, so you can send every signup without checking first. Embedded Mailchimp forms can be replaced with our signup forms.
6. Verify your domain and warm up
Verify your sending domain, then send the first campaigns to your most engaged contacts while your new setup builds reputation. Our guide on warming up a domain explains how.
Questions
Asked at the counter
Is Mailburger a cheaper alternative to Mailchimp?
At 10,000 contacts Mailchimp Essentials is $110 a month and Standard $135. Mailburger Pro covers up to 50,000 contacts and 500,000 emails for €20 a month. Mailchimp quotes US dollars and Mailburger euros.
Does Mailchimp have a free plan?
Yes: 250 contacts, 500 sends a month with at most 250 a day, 1 seat and Mailchimp branding. Automations, email scheduling and A/B tests are not included.
Does Mailchimp charge for unsubscribed contacts?
Yes. Mailchimp counts subscribed, unsubscribed and non-subscribed contacts, and leaves out only archived, cleaned and deleted ones. On Mailburger unsubscribed and bounced contacts do not count toward your plan.
Does Mailchimp offer single sign-on?
Only on Premium, which starts at $350 a month for 10,000 contacts, and only through OpenID Connect. Mailburger includes SAML single sign-on on Pro at €20 a month.
What happens to Mailchimp Transactional if I move?
Mailchimp Transactional, formerly Mandrill, only works with a Standard or Premium marketing plan. If you move marketing to Mailburger, use a separate API provider for app email such as receipts and password resets.
How do I move from Mailchimp to Mailburger?
Export your audience as CSV, import it into an audience, swap merge tags such as *|FNAME|* for {{first_name}} and rebuild your welcome series first. The step-by-step guide is on this page.
